Yoga Session

Yoga has been around for over 5,000 years and originated in Northern India. It is now backed by scientific research on its efficacy for supporting mental and physical health.  When using Yoga as a therapeutic tool, a yoga therapist focuses on the mental health issues or physical ailments that a child or teen is struggling with and designs a daily movement practice based on specific poses that are known to alleviate a specific mental or physical condition.

 

An example of this may be a child or teen who is struggling with PTSD. We know from research that one of the domains of PTSD is the activation or hyperarousal of the autonomic nervous system. In yoga therapy, we can utilise specialised ways to soothe and soften the nervous system and bring back awareness and experience of safety within the body. Children and teens with ASD can also be supported to regulate their emotions and soothe and soften their nervous system from overstimulation.
